After a tree has been removed, the stump that remains is more than just an eyesore — it is a tripping hazard, a magnet for insects, and an obstacle that prevents you from fully using your yard. Professional stump grinding eliminates the stump below grade, allowing you to reclaim the space for new plantings, lawn restoration, or landscaping. At Southeast Arborist, we use commercial-grade Rayco stump grinders that can handle stumps of any size, from small ornamental stumps to massive oak and pine stumps three feet across.
Stump grinding differs from stump removal. Grinding uses a powerful rotating cutting wheel to chip the stump into small wood shavings, typically grinding 6 to 12 inches below the soil surface. The root system is left in place to decompose naturally over time. Full stump removal — physically extracting the entire stump and root ball — is a far more invasive process that leaves a large hole and disturbs surrounding landscape. For the vast majority of residential situations, grinding is the preferred method because it is faster, less disruptive, and more cost-effective.
The South Shore's mix of tree species presents different grinding challenges. Hardwood stumps from oaks and maples are dense and require more time and equipment wear to grind. Softwood stumps from white pines and spruces grind faster but can be much larger in diameter. Our commercial Rayco equipment handles all species efficiently, and our operators know how to adjust technique and approach based on the wood type and stump condition.
We offer stump grinding as a standalone service for old stumps that have been sitting in your yard for years, and as a same-day add-on with tree removals at a discounted rate. Either way, the result is a clean area filled with wood chip mulch that you can leave in place, top with soil for grass seed, or clear out entirely for new plantings.
